Introduction to College of English Studies, DLU
With a history of more than 50 years, the College of English Studies (CES) of Dalian University (DLU) is an exemplary institution in Dalian. CES has a history of almost 30 years for undergraduate education and nearly 20 years for post-graduate education. With a view to “developing into the College of Foreign Languages of a well-known municipal university in China” and with “serving Dalian and connecting China with the world” as its mission, CES commits itself to “cultivating application-oriented foreign language talents with international mindedness and a solid foundation of knowledge”, during the process of which the motto of “bridging cultural gaps with languages and contributing to world progress” has gradually been formulated.
CES offers a national first-level master program of Foreign Languages and Literature and two undergraduate programs: English Language and Literature (ELL) & Translation and Interpreting (BTI). The college is composed of four departments, i.e., the Department of ELL, the Department of BTI, the 1st Department of College English, and the 2nd Department of College English, among which the Department of ELL, the 1st Department of College English, and the 2nd Department of College English have been rated as excellent teaching and research units by Dalian University. In 2021, CES was awarded the title of “Excellent Teaching Management Team” of Dalian University. With more than 50 years of hard work and diligent cultivation and the steady efforts of several generations, CES is now exhibiting its vigorous vitality by making continual progress in the quality of talent cultivation and teaching and management standards, and enjoying a good reputation provincially and nationally among foreign language colleges and universities.
CES has a faculty of 69 members, including 6 professors and 16 associate professors, with 6 of them having doctoral degrees, 3 being doctoral candidates, 1 doctoral supervisor, and 7 master’s supervisors. Among the faculty members, there are also discipline leading talents at the provincial level, provincial renowned teachers, provincial distinguished professors, provincial outstanding young teachers, evaluation experts of the National Social Science Foundation, as well as the winners of the 1st prize of provincial excellent teaching achievements, the 3rd prize of the “FLEP” National College Foreign Language Teaching Competition, the special awards of the National “Internet Plus” English Teaching Competition, the 1st prize of “FLTRP” “Teaching Star” National Semifinals, the 1st prize of the “FLEP” Foreign Language Teaching Competition of Ordinary Colleges and Universities of Liaoning Province, and the 1st prize of the College Teaching Innovation Competition of Liaoning Province. Meanwhile, several celebrated experts and scholars have been recruited as part-time visiting professors. The faculty has developed a number of courses honored as “Quality Core Courses of Liaoning Province”, provincial first-class courses, school-level excellent courses, and school-level excellent teaching teams.
CES boasts a marvelous scientific research atmosphere and holds the vice presidency of Liaoning Translation Society. In the past 20 years, under the leadership of Professor Men Shunde and Professor Gao Wei, fruitful research results have been achieved in the fields of translation, linguistics, foreign literature and foreign language teaching, and a well-structured competent research team has been formed. The teachers of CES have undertaken a series of national, provincial and ministerial projects, published a number of important academic papers, and more than 60 monographs, bilingual dictionaries, translations, and textbooks. The specialties of applied translation and classic translation research are gaining prominence. Xinhua Dictionary, whose cumulative circulation has reached the record of more than 400 million copies, and which has been rated as one of the “300 most influential books in China”, was translated into Xinhua Dictionary (Chinese-English Edition) by CES faculty and officially published by the Commercial Press. An Introduction to Sinographic Morphology, Chinese Academic Translation Project approved by the National Social Science Foundation of China, and the 5-volume History of Chinese Wushu, the Classic China International Publishing Project supervised by National Press and Publication Administration, have attracted wide academic attention. CES holds the chief editorship of the international professional journal Business Translation. A number of research projects have won national, provincial and ministerial scientific research achievement awards.
CES is strengthening its international links through joint programs with universities in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and New Zealand, and has accepted students from universities in Canada and other countries for internships. CES offers an undergraduate short-term training program, a 3+1 master’s program, and a master’s and doctoral training program with the University of Stirling, indicating the improved level of international cooperation and talent training. Moreover, undergraduate exchange programs have been in place with universities in Taiwan, and international teachers from English-speaking countries are employed on a regular basis.
CES possesses advanced teaching equipment and a digital language teaching center equipped with 813 computers and 10 high-end servers, including a CAT machine-assisted translation laboratory installed with Trados and a scenario translation training laboratory furnished with 4 simultaneous interpretation training rooms. All digital language laboratories are installed with advanced professional teaching platforms to implement functions such as “independent English learning”, “language test data analysis”, and “digital teaching monitoring and analysis” to meet the needs of multi-level language teaching and training.CES takes the lead in Liaoning Province in the construction and management of network-based independent English learning base, which has unanimously been favorably commented on by experts and teachers from other colleges and universities all over China.
CES has always been attaching great importance to the quality of talent cultivation. The comprehensive quality of students is high, and a large number of graduates have been admitted to Beijing Foreign Studies University, Shanghai International Studies University, Fudan University, University of Edinburgh and other well-known universities to pursue further studies toward master’s degrees. Xiong Jian, a graduate of 2018, was admitted to Beijing Foreign Studies University thanks to her ranking the 1st in BFSU’s post-graduate qualification exam, and during her study in BFSU, she was given an opportunity to study toward a second master’s degree in the University of Dublin (Ireland) by virtue of her top ranking in the series of screening tests for that purpose. CES’s students have impressive language competence in application, and have excelled in various English competitions at national, regional, provincial and municipal levels, once winning the 5th place in the national finals and the 2nd and 3rd prizes in the National English Debate Competition. CES’s graduates are generally welcomed and praised for their solid basic knowledge, strong practical ability and excellent comprehensive quality by employers of a variety of industries.
Forging ahead into the future, CES will uphold its former excellent tradition, implement comprehensive reforms, unite all the relevant parties, strive to open up new prospects for further development, and bring its school running to a much higher level during the 14th 5-Year Plan Period.
